Last week we hosted the second in a series of workshops given by Cape Town based photographer Neville Lockhart.
Thanks to the huge success of the first one, we extended this Food themed workshop to a two day affair.

The first being dedicated to aspiring students over two sessions.

The second day was a slightly longer; slightly more advanced workshop, directed at professional photographers and experienced amateurs.

Both days were lots of fun and full of knowledge sharing.
It was fascinating to compare the difference in questions asked by the students from two different colleges and then to those asked by the Pro’s!
Such different questions about pretty much the same subject matter, ranging from technical equipment, software and colour output profile questions all the way to how a studio generator works!
Neville answered each question thoroughly and with as much emphasis on clarity no matter “level” of question was asked. I think this is what makes Neville a great tutor. Always open to and constantly encouraging questions and always answering honestly and to the full depth of his own knowledge. Something that people whether a beginner or seasoned pro really appreciate and respond well to.

It was really exciting and inspiring to see such a keen interest in the subject matter across a real range of photographers.
Arina du Plessis provided a wealth of information and really showed how much experience she has in the field of food photographer. Calmly answering any questions thrown her way and all the while showing little tricks and tips on food preparation and styling deliciously to make the photographing process that much easier.

I think all who attended went away with a greater appreciation of food photography and an understanding of all that is involved with what is often considered a far less glamorous and simple genre of photography. But when you get down to it, it is definitely no less technical and without challenges than any fashion shoot!
But, as Arina said on the day, “At least the models on her shoots never show up in a bad mood…”

Thanks to all who attended and make the days what they were and to Neville and Arina for doing such a sterling job.
Looking forward to the next one!!
Most likely a “Beauty and Retouching” themed event… Check facebook.com/hasselbladza and your inboxes for more info, coming soon…
